Are there any sharks in the Long Island Sound?
By Forinfos - 19/02/2026 - 0 comments
There are very few sharks in the waters of Long Island Sound, but brown sharks and sand tiger sharks are the ones most commonly seen in the estuary. A variety of species are found off the outer shores of Long Island, such as threshers, makos, blues and great whites.
As of 2014, the most recent authenticated shark attack within the waters was in 1961. It was a provoked, non-fatal attack. A fisherman was bitten on the fingers and right shin by an unknown species. Another attack occurred in 1960 when a diver suffered a superficial laceration on his left arm, also from an unidentified species.
