For most people, the shingles vaccine is a safe option that can help prevent the occurrence of shingles, according to WebMD. The vaccine has been approved for use in people age 50 and older and reduces the risk of developing shingles by around 50 percent.
According to WebMD, the shingles vaccine is not for everyone. It should not be given to anyone who has an allergy to the antibiotic neomycin, gelatin or other substances found in the shingles vaccine. This vaccine is also not recommended for people with weakened immune systems, who are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment or undergoing treatment for tuberculosis.
