How often do shooting stars occur?

Meteors falling through the atmosphere, called shooting stars, occur regularly and are seen on any clear night every 10 to 15 minutes. Shooting stars occur reliably and in large numbers during the meteor showers that occur yearly based on the passage of particular comets or minor planets close to Earth.

Shooting stars occur most frequently during the large meteor showers, such as the Quadrantids in the beginning of January, the Lyrids in mid-April, the Eta Aquarids in the beginning of May, the Perseids in mid-August, the Orionids in mid-October, the Leonids in mid-November and the Geminids and Ursids in mid-December. Around 20 meteor showers occur each year.
