How should you harvest hazelnuts?

Harvest hazelnuts by gathering them from beneath the hazelnut tree, removing the shells and preparing them to be eaten. In the United States, Hazlenuts are usually harvested in October.

1. Gather the hazelnuts

   Wait for the hazelnuts to fall from the tree, and gather them with a rake. Discard the leafy husks, as well as any nuts with holes or damage.

2. Remove the shells

   Spread out the hazelnuts in one layer in a plastic bag, tapping each with a hammer until you hear it pop.

3. Finish the shelling process

   After shelling the hazelnuts, empty the bag onto a tray, and remove the large pieces of shells. Put the shelled nuts into a sieve, and shake them to remove dust.
