When should you go to sleep?

The best time to go to sleep is between 8 p.m. and midnight, according Markham Heid for Time magazine. Sleeping during this time period is optimal for getting the right amount of REM and non-REM sleep.
The exact optimal bedtime varies by individual according to genetics and age, reports Heid. However, going to bed after midnight reduces the amount of non-REM sleep, which is better at restoring the body's vital functions. Too little non-REM sleep can result in drowsiness the next day. REM, or rapid eye movement, sleep involves quick movement of the eyes and usually makes up about a quarter of a total night's sleep, notes Wikipedia.
