Patients with diabetes should be advised by their doctor on how often they must test their blood sugar levels, according to Mayo Clinic. Patients with type 1 diabetes may need to test their blood four to eight times per day, while type 2 diabetics may only require two times.
Patients with type 1 diabetes may have to test their blood sugar levels each time they eat a meal or a snack, each time they exercise, whenever they go to sleep at night and periodically throughout the night, states Mayo Clinic. Patients with type 2 diabetes who manage their disease with insulin may need to test their blood sugar levels before they eat and before they go to bed at night.
