Symptoms of tongue cancer tend to resemble those of other oral cancers, so it's wise to seek medical attention in case of anything unusual, explains Cancer Treatment Centers of America. It can also be confused with a persistent cold sore in the mouth.
Tongue cancers are also different depending on their location on the tongue and in the mouth, explains WebMD. Cancer that is at the front part of the tongue is called squamous cell cancer of the oral tongue. Squamous cell cancer at the base of the tongue is cancer at the rear third of the tongue. The characteristics of these two cancers are different, so they require a medical diagnosis.
