How often should I water roses?

How often to water roses varies based on soil, weather and drainage conditions, reports the Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society. Since roses do not grow well in drought conditions, they require daily watering in hot, dry climates. In moderate climates, roses can be watered every three to five days.
Clay soils drain more slowly and require less watering than sandy soils, which drain quickly, states the Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society. Adding mulch to the ground helps roses retain moisture. Because container-grown roses also drain quickly, they require more frequent watering, especially during hot weather. However, avoid having the container sit in water, as this causes root rot.
