The side effects associated with alpha-lipoic acid are temporary and relatively mild, according to WebMD. The most common side effects of alpha-lipoic acid are upset stomach and a rash, claims the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Another known side effect associated with alpha-lipoic acid is a drop in blood sugar, but that can be monitored and corrected by a physician, states the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant that fights several health conditions, including diabetes, vitiligo and neural issues. Alpha-lipoic acid is safe for a majority of adults since the side effects are minimal and temporary, says WebMD. However, pregnant or breast-feeding women, those with diabetes or low blood sugar, those taking medications, or people with vitamin B1 deficiency should consult with a doctor before taking alpha-lipoic acid.
