Side effects of red rice yeast include headache, stomach ache, bloating or gas, dizziness, heartburn and muscle aches and weakness, according to University of Maryland Medical Center. Pregnant and breastfeeding women and persons under 20 years of age should not take red yeast.

Red rice yeast contains the same active ingredient as prescription statin drugs and may cause side effects such as liver damage and muscle damage, cautions WebMD.

Patients allergic or sensitive to rice, red yeast or members of the yeast family should avoid red rice yeast supplements, as eye and nose inflammation, hives, itching, shortness of breath and swelling under the skin may occur, warns Mayo Clinic.
