The side effects of thermal balloon abrasion include cramping, nausea and discharge, according to WebMD. The side effects vary from person to person.
Thermal balloon abrasion is done in order to destroy the uterine lining in women when they experience abnormal vaginal bleeding. The procedure is done by filling a balloon with saline solution and heating it to a specific temperature. The balloon is popped by a doctor as the uterine wall heals by scarring. The scarring in turn, causes the abnormal bleeding to stop. Only a professional can perform the procedure and on average, it takes from a few days up to 2 weeks for a woman to recover.
