A sigmoidoscopy is a test done to check an individual for signs colon cancer. A sigmoid scope is a thin flexible tube with a light and a camera on the end. The lower area of the sigmoid colon and rectum are viewed for polyps, according to the American Cancer Society.
During the test, which takes 10 to 20 minutes, the end of the scope is gently eased into the rectum. The doctor views the area on a TV or computer screen. Normally, medication is not need for a sigmoidoscopy, which causes only slight discomfort for most people, according to the American Cancer Society.
