Bipolar disorder is equally common among men and women, according to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance. While equally common among the genders, there are differences in how the illness manifests itself, states Everyday Health.
Women experience rapid cycling three times as much as men, says the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance. It is common for women with bipolar disorder to experience more depressive and mixed episodes than men experience. Bipolar disorder begins earlier in men and is usually more severe or manic, according to Everyday Health. Men act out more frequently during manic episodes and are also more likely to have problems with substance abuse.
