Health care professionals test leukocyte levels in the urine by placing a color sensitive dipstick in the cup of urine or by analyzing drops of the urine under a microscope, according to Mayo Clinic. The color of the dipstick changes if high levels of leukocytes are present.

Leukocytes, also known as white blood cells, are visible under a microscope in the microscopic exam. If they are detected in either test, it can be a sign of infection, reports the Mayo Clinic. One infection that is characterized by a significant amount of white blood cells in the urine is a urinary tract infection, states MedicineNet.
