Advil and Aleve are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs used to treat pain and reduce fever, according to MedlinePlus. Ibuprofen is the active ingredient in Advil, while Aleve is a brand of the drug naproxen. Both are taken orally as tablets or capsules, whereas Advil is available in liquid form as well.
Advil offers nonprescription medicines for infants and children, while the direction of a doctor is needed to administer Aleve to children under the age of 12, according to Drugs.com. Common ailments treated by both drugs include arthritis, menstrual cramps and muscle aches. Advil and Aleve are also marketed in combination with other drugs for decongestion to treat symptoms of coughing and colds.
