A vulvectomy is an operation used in the treatment of vulvar cancer, in which all or part of the vulva is surgically removed, according to the American Cancer Society. A partial vulvectomy removes the affected part of the vulva, while a radical vulvectomy removes the entire vulva and underlying tissues.

Radical vulvectomy is only performed in rare cases, notes the American Cancer Society. Complications of vulvectomy include infections and difficulties with healing. In many cases, surgeons attempt to remove only the affected area as well as a partial margin of tissue surrounding the cancer, which is called a modified radical vulvectomy.
