Does the Skeeter Eater work?
By Forinfos - 15/01/2026 - 0 comments
Popular belief holds that skeeter eaters eat mosquitoes but, in fact, adult skeeter eaters may not even feed at all. When they do feed, adult skeeter eaters use their long proboscis as a straw to suck up nectar or other liquid materials.
Also known by other names such as crane flies, daddy longlegs, mosquito eaters or mosquito hawks, they are insects in the fly family Tipuloidea. The larvae feed on decaying wood and vegetation, root hairs, roots and crop leaves, and they may cause sufficient damage to kill a plant completely. However, the larvae are ecologically important because they decompose organic matter on forest floors and help to enrich soil and improve the habitat of other organisms.
