How do skunks defend themselves?

Skunks defend themselves with a horrible-smelling spray that is strong enough to ward off badgers, foxes, wolves and bears. According to National Geographic, the oily liquid is produced from anal scent glands under the skunk's tail.
When attacked or threatened, the skunk turns and blasts the enemy from as far as 10 feet away with exceptional accuracy. While harmless aside from irritation and the possibility of temporary blindness, the unpleasant smell of the mist can linger for several days. The vivid black-and-white coat of the skunk is instantly recognized by predators and likely deters attacks by those familiar with the stench.
