What do sled dogs eat?

A sled dog's diet varies from a high calorie soup for breakfast to dry dog food with added rice and supplements for dinner. Their diets change from a lighter once daily meal in the summer to much higher calorie meals twice daily in the winter.

A sled dog must expend lots of energy in winter to haul a sled, gear and person around. A high-calorie diet consisting of fatty and nutrient rich soup broth for breakfast, and 4 cups of high performance dry dog food, rice and supplements for dinner gives them the needed energy. An extra treat may come in the form of a fresh bone to chew on. In warmer months, sled dogs don't need as many calories, so their diet is reduced to a daily serving of dry dog food.
