Slippage after cervical neck surgery is when one of the vertebrae in the neck slips down onto the vertebrae below it, according to Cleveland Clinic. This is also called post surgical spondylolisthesis. It is more common in the lower back, or the lumbar spine.

Medical professionals grade these slips from Grade I to Grade IV, with IV being the worst, says Cleveland Clinic. A Grade III or IV slip of the vertebrae may compress the spinal nerve and cause pain.

Patients who have symptoms of a cervical spondylolisthesis experience pain in the back of the head and around the shoulders, according to the American Center for Spine & Neurosurgery. The pain, as well as numbness, may also radiate out to the limbs.
