To remove the smell of cat urine from carpet, a homemade cleaner made from dish soap and natural ingredients such as vinegar, baking soda and peroxide works to clean and neutralize the odor. There are also commercial cleaners with enzymes available on the market to use in place of the homemade cleaner.
To remove the smell of cat urine out of carpet:
- Absorb the moisture
- Mix water with vinegar
- Sprinkle baking soda
- Mix hydrogen peroxide with dish soap
- Vacuum
If the urine is fresh and the carpet is wet, use paper towels to first blot up as much moisture as possible before proceeding to the next step. Avoid rubbing the area.
Mix water with vinegar in equal parts and pour over the affected area. Allow the area to fully dry before moving to the next step.
Sprinkle baking soda liberally over the affected area.
Mix four parts hydrogen peroxide with one part of liquid dish soap and mix it into the baking soda. Use a sponge, toothbrush, dish brush or gloved hands to fully mix the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide mixture. Allow the solution to fully dry.
After the mixture is fully dried, thoroughly vacuum the area. If the smell persists, repeat the above steps, or use a commercial pet-odor neutralizer.
