When was SMS invented?

Short Message Service (SMS) was created during the late 1980s by Matti Makkonen, a Finnish engineer. The initial concept for the service occurred in 1984, but the first SMS was not sent until 1992. Makkonen was not sure his invention would succeed, and he did not patent it.

The first SMS was sent from a personal computer to a mobile phone in the United Kingdom through the Vodafone GSM network. Over the years, the popularity of SMS has risen considerably, and it is estimated that more than two trillion SMS messages are sent each year in the United States. The creators of SMS limited messages to no more than 160 characters, but mobile operators have since adopted a limit of 140 characters.
