The state of Tennessee experiences snowfall. While Tennessee generally experiences mild winters, it can experience extreme changes in climate. This is due to the state's location, with the eastern portion of Tennessee in the Smokey Mountains and the western portion along the Mississippi River.

One of the largest snowstorms that occurred in Tennessee was on January 28, 1951. It began as rainfall, but turned to sleet and snow as a cold front moved into the state. The storm lasted 10 days and resulted in 8 inches of snow and ice. Many people in the Nashville area lost power and phone service during the storm.
