Major bodies of water in the southeast region of the United States include Lake Okeechobee in Florida, the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi River, which runs along Mississippi's western border and into Louisiana. All three bodies of water contribute to the economy and ecology of the Southeast.
Lake Okeechobee is the second largest lake in the United States that lies completely within the borders of the country. It is also extremely shallow with an average depth of 9 feet. The Mississippi River is the third longest river in North America at 2,350 miles. The Gulf of Mexico which borders Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Florida and Alabama is the ninth largest body of water on Earth.
