Hestia was the mild mannered protector of hearth and home. She also presided over the baking of bread, and she was the goddess of the sacrificial flame.
Hestia was also referred to by the names Histia and Vesta. Few temples or shrines were built in Hestia's honor, but as the goddess of the hearth and innermost things, she presided over and was worshipped at the hearths in all homes.
Hestia was the first-born, and first-swallowed, child of Rhea and of Kronos, who ate his children. Later, she was the last to emerge when he was forced to regurgitate them by the god Zeus. It was also Zeus who later granted her permission to remain an eternal virgin.
