What is a split foyer?

A split-foyer home has a front entry that opens to a landing on a set of stairs with a short flight up to the main living level and a short flight down to more finished living space. The split-foyer was popular in home construction in the 1970s.

The true split-level home has a front entry at the same level as one of the floors of the home. True split-levels have a minimum of three levels. The entry leads into the main living space with the remainder of the house stacked. The split-foyer reduces the size entry so its floor becomes very small.. In 2014, split-foyer homes are much less popular than they were with earlier generations.
