Tree climbing equipment includes saddles, spurs, fliplines, lanyards and climbing lines. Tree climbers also use safety equipment including helmets and supportive boots to protect themselves while climbing.

Tree climbing rope is static and lacks stretchiness, unlike rock climbing rope. Some climbers tie Blake's hitch knots for the central friction knots in their ropes. This knot slides up and down, but locks in place if the climber lets go. Other climbers use Unicenders in place of Blake's hitch knots. The Unicender allows the climber to ascend and descend with the same piece of equipment, rather than using a belay device during descent.
