A links golf course refers to a course that is situated along a seaside coastline, with the term "links" directly referring to a ridge. Although the term once referred to a specific type of golf course, it now means any golf course.

Similar to the game of golf itself, the term "links" originated in Scotland during the late 10th century. Scotland has 92 golf courses as of 2014, and 17 percent of these courses fall under the original definition of a links golf course, with another 5 percent featuring elements of a links golf course. Other golf course types in Scotland include moorland, which equal 17 percent of the total courses, and parkland, which total 61 percent of the total number of courses.
