NFL teams have played a total of 49 Super Bowl games through 2015. The game has been contested each year since the Green Bay Packers won the first Super Bowl in 1967. The 2016 Super Bowl in Santa Clara, California, marks the 50th Super Bowl contest in history.

Although the league did not officially adopt the "Super Bowl" name until 1969, it retroactively applied the name to the 1967 and 1968 contests. NFL championship games before 1967 are not considered Super Bowls.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have won a record six Super Bowls as of 2015. The Steelers are tied with the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots with a record eight appearances each.
