Spotting after getting an IUD inserted is normal, according to WebMD. Also common when having an IUD inserted is cramping. Both side effects are generally mild and are usually no cause for concern
The light spotting and cramps normally disappear within one to two days after having an IUD inserted, according to WebMD. If the bleeding becomes severe, especially if it causes a woman to replace her usual tampons or pads every two hours, then it is a sign of a much more serious condition, and she should seek medical care as soon as possible. Other severe side effects that need medical attention include a foul smelling vaginal discharge accompanied by a fever or chills and severe abdominal pain.
