Lumberyards sell boards in lengths of 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24 feet. Standard dimensions of plywood are 4 feet wide by 8 feet long, though some stores sell plywood in sheets of 2 by 2 feet, 2 by 4 or 4 by 4.

Carpenters in the United States and Canada who frame walls can purchase common stud or pre-cut sizes. For example, many ceilings measure 8, 9 or 10 feet tall. Studs in these standard lengths are available in 92 5/8 inches, 104 5/8 inches and 116 5/8 inches. If a worker needs a stud cut exactly, he should specify a length at the store or lumberyard.
