The path to World War I began when Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist, killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June 1914. The archduke was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The war began a month later when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.

Princip shot and killed the archduke and his wife, and then he tried to kill himself. Bystanders prevented him from committing suicide and held him until police arrived to take custody. Princip was tried and sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murders. Princip died after the amputation of his arm in April 1918.

World War I ended in November 1918. As a result of the war, the League of Nations was established.
