The state of Texas has the most whitetail deer. Between 3 million and 4 million of the estimated 30 million whitetails in the U.S. make their home in the Lone Star State.
Whitetails favor wooded and brushy areas that provide cover and a variety of food sources, including plants, fruit, shrubs and grass. The best time to view the magnificent animals is during the summer, as the fawns have been born, and the adult bucks no longer feel pressured to breed. Deer are seen in most state parks throughout the year and are most abundant at Choke Canyon State Park, Kerrville-Shreiner State Park and South Llano River State Park.
