As of October 2015, Hawaii, California, Nevada, Alaska and Utah usually have the highest average gas prices. Prices may be higher due to higher taxes or the cost of transportation.
As of Oct. 17, 2015, the current average gas price for regular unleaded gasoline in Hawaii is $2.893 per gallon. The highest recorded gas price in this state is $4.618 per gallon, which was the gas price on April 11, 2012. The current average gas price in California is $2.892 per gallon, and its highest recorded gas price is $4.671 per gallon, which happened on Oct. 9, 2012. For Nevada, the current average gas price is $2.837, while its highest recorded gas price is $4.268 the average gas price on June 20, 2008.
