Approximately 4,381 people died in motorcycle crashes in 2013, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). The same department states that the number represented 13 percent of vehicle crash deaths for 2013.
Motorcycles have a higher fatality rate per unit than cars, with 72.34 per 100,000 registered motorcycles ending up in a fatal crash in 2006, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In the United States, approximately 80 percent of motorcycle accidents result in death or injury. For cars, this figure is approximately 20 percent. A 2007 report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety claimed that supersport motorcycles were about four times more likely to be involved in an accident than other kinds of motorcycles.
