The stereotypical role of the 1950s woman was for her to become a wife and mother. Women were encouraged to go to college to find a husband.
Getting married was far more important than getting an educational degree. The women were also seen as mothers, so it was common for them to start families right away. In the media, women were portrayed as domesticated, so it was typical for them to stay at home with their children, cook, clean and take care of any other domestic duties. Back then, a woman was often defined by the man in her life.
