As of 2015, there is insufficient scientific evidence suggesting that stinging nettles have medicinal value, according to WebMD. Anecdotally, however, it has been used to relieve the symptoms associated with hay fever.
Stinging nettle is a plant that some people use for medicinal purposes. It has been used to treat several ailments, such as hay fever, bleeding, benign prostatic hyperplasia, diabetes and cancer, states WebMD. There are several side effects associated with stinging nettle, including stomachaches, sweating or skin rash. Stinging nettle should not be used by women who are pregnant, as it could possibly cause contractions of the uterus. These contractions can cause miscarriage.
