There is no detailed record that explains when and how stomata was discovered, however, it is known that, in the 1990s, scientists learned of the genetic mechanisms that control the way a stomata develops. This study looked at the plant Arabidopsis and mapped the development process of the stomata as the plant grew from a pavement cell through various cell division processes to become a stoma.
A stomata is a pore that is on the outer layer of plants that reside on land. It works by opening and closing whenever the plant needs to transport nutrients. It also helps with the process of the carbon dioxide and oxygen exchange that plants need in order to breathe and survive.
