Saint Elizabeth, the cousin of Mary, mother of Jesus, was the mother of John the Baptist. She was elderly when she bore John, and he was her only child.
An angel told Elizabeth's husband Zacharias that his wife would bear a son, which he doubted. Because of his disbelief, he was rendered mute until son John was born.
While Elizabeth was still pregnant with John, the Virgin Mary came to visit, and the baby in Elizabeth's womb did a "leap for joy" (Luke 1:41-45) when she arrived. Elizabeth said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!" This Bible verse is the foundation for the prayer "Hail Mary."
