The Strait of Magellan is located between the southern tip of South America and Tierra del Fuego. The land north of the strait is mainland South America. The land south of the strait is Tierra del Fuego island.
The waters of the strait are almost entirely under the jurisdiction of Chile, except for the part at the farthest east, which Argentina governs. The strait connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Ferdinand Magellan was the first European to navigate the tortuous waters of the Strait of Magellan on his trip around the world in 1520. The 350-mile journey took him and his crew 38 days.
