Are strawberries considered to be citrus fruits?

Strawberries are not citrus fruits. They belong to the rose family with other fruits such as apples, peaches, apricots, cherries, blackberries and raspberries. Citrus fruits belong to the rue family.

A citrus fruit has a leathery peel. Between the fruit and the peel is a layer of white, spongy pith called the mesocarp. Inside the peel, the fruit is divided into segments that contain small juice sacs. Strawberries don't have these characteristics. Instead, the strawberry is a fleshy, juicy fruit. The fleshy part doesn't come from the plant's ovary but from the receptacle that holds the ovaries. What makes it unique is that its seeds are on the exterior rather than the interior.
