Stress can be one of the causes of bloodshot eyes, though there are specific causes of morning and evening bloodshot eyes such as sleep deprivation, overuse of contact lenses, alcohol and food/diet. Bloodshot eyes will occur whenever the blood vessels in the eyes become dilated or swollen, according to The New York Times.

Blood vessels can become swollen when there is an insufficient oxygen supply to the eye. Bloodshot eyes are usually painless, and are not a cause for concern unless there is eye pain or impaired vision.

Bloodshot eyes caused by stress should be rested, since stress may cause the fatigue and eye strain that provokes swollen blood vessels.
