The structural formula of carbon dioxide is linear. Carbon dioxide, or CO2, is a gaseous compound that has a molar mass of 44 grams/mole. It is a naturally occurring compound that is composed of two oxygen molecules bound to one carbon molecule.
Carbon dioxide compounds exist in a linear, symmetrical form with the carbon molecule in the middle and an oxygen molecule covalently bound on each side of the carbon. The oxygen and carbon molecules share double bonds and have a bond length of 116.3 picometers. It is considered a linear molecule due to its hybridized carbon molecule and its symmetrical carbon-oxygen double bonds.
