Canada shares the North American Numbering Plan, a system of geographically assigned area codes, with the United States and Caribbean countries. Because of this, the 011 exit code is not required for calls to all countries within the plan's zone.

The country code is 1 for telephone calls to Canada, the United States and Caribbean countries from throughout the world. It is followed by the area code and telephone number. Area codes for major Canadian cities include 204 for Winnipeg, Manitoba; 416 and 647 for metropolitan Toronto, Ontario; 613 for Ottawa, Ontario; 778 for Vancouver, British Columbia; and 780 for Edmonton, Alberta.
