Who studies volcanoes?

Volcanoes are studied by people called volcanologists. The primary job of a volcanologist is to study volcanoes and learn how to better protect those who live in close proximity to them. By understanding volcanoes, volcanologists are able to provide advanced warning to people who live near volcanoes when a volcanic eruption is imminent.

Volcanologists are experts in understanding volcanoes because they are intimately familiar with the chemistry and the structure of the planet and its rocks, while also having extensive knowledge in knowing how volcanic material interacts with water and air. Volcanologists are true geologists who regularly make important contributions to the scientific community.
