The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has reached successful settlements in many age discrimination cases, including ones against 3M Company and Allstate Insurance Company. In the 2011 case against 3M, the company paid a settlement of $3 million to about 290 workers, according to the EEOC.

The commission argued that 3M had refused to provide leadership training for older workers and that it had laid off hundreds of employees over age 45. In the 2009 case against Allstate, the commission alleged that the company instituted a hiring moratorium that affected agents older than 40 more than those who were younger. The case settled for $4.5 million, notes the EEOC.
