What is a suffix?

A suffix is a set of letters added to the end of an existing word to change its meaning. Suffixes often change the grammatical class of their respective words. For example, the word "likeable" contains the suffix "able," changing the word "like" from a verb to an adjective.

Other examples of words with suffixes are "childish," "worker," "tasteless," "reader" and "idolize." In some instances, the spelling of the root word changes when a suffix is added, such as with the words "beautiful" and "ugliness." In these cases, the "y" in the root words "beauty" and "ugly" is changed to an "i."
