Does sugar cause cancer?

Some evidence indicates that ingesting large amounts of sugar increases the risk of development of certain cancers, such as cancer of the esophagus, according to Mayo Clinic. Consuming high quantities of sugar may lead to obesity and diabetes, conditions that may make the development of cancer more likely.
Blood sugar is an essential source of energy for all cells, explains Mayo Clinic. While studies indicate that cancer cells consume higher amounts of sugar than normal cells, no evidence has been presented as of 2014 that proves that eating sugar exacerbates cancer, states the National Cancer Institute. There is also no evidence that eliminating sugar from the diet shrinks or eradicates cancer cells.
