Sumatran tigers are apex predators. They prey on fish, birds, porcupines, monkeys, wild pigs, deer and tapirs. They are threatened by habitat loss, depletion of their prey base and poaching.
The Sumatran tiger is the smallest living tiger subspecies and is closely related to the extinct Bali tiger and Javan tiger. Males weigh up to 310 pounds and females weigh up to 243 pounds. Zoo Atlanta estimates that there are fewer than 400 individuals left in the wild. Sumatran tigers are strictly protected by Indonesian law. The Indonesian government has established a 110,000-acre conservation area for the tigers and is cooperating with the Australia Zoo for species conservation.
