What is the surgery that makes feet smaller?

According to Time, "Cinderella surgery" involves amputating parts of the toes to shorten feet. CBS News points out that this is sometimes done for health reasons, such as constant foot pain or deformities. However, some women choose surgery in order to fit into very high heels or smaller shoe sizes.

CBS News explains that foot surgery requires patients to stay immobile for at least one week after the procedure. However, infection, swelling and scars are real possibilities because feet are so necessary for ordinary daily activities. In addition, the amputation of the entire little toe in order to don high heels sometimes throws off a patient's balance, making it harder to walk.
